Tomin – Untitled Dirge [International Anthem]

The new album from multi-instrumentalist Tomin Perea-Chamblee and his septet expands the horizons of the big band sound. The ten track release demonstrates his prowess as a composer as all but two tracks are originals. The septet is composed of musicians from Brooklyn to Chicago. “Untitled Dirge” is an emotive tune with layers of harmony. Tomin’s trombone melodies along with Cellists Clerida Eltime and Lester St Louis create orchestral moments that resonate long after the track has finished. The tone feels somber at first but shifts to hope for a new beginning. The punchy bass from Luke Stewart sets the tone on “Movement”. Tomin’s heavenly flute melodies are undeniably soothing. Although recorded live, Tomin’s overdubbing of trombone, cellos, bass clarinet and flute heightens the mood throughout. Tomin’s re-imagination of the big band results in an exploration of moods, rhythms and gorgeous melodies. The Brooklyn based musician is certainly on the rise.
Rahaan Presents The Ones [BBE Music]

Chicago House and Disco DJ/Producer Rahaan has been DJ’ing since the eighties. He held down residencies at the Spot, the Buddha lounge and DJ sets around the globe. With “The Ones”, Rahaan has assembled an array of musicians and vocalists to make his compositions soar. “We Are The Ones” is infectious Disco funk that features vocalist Marcus J. Alston and Nancy Clayton. “What You Are To Me” is warm soulful House with a bubbling baseline. The warmth can be felt throughout the ten track lp. The live drums and gorgeous piano melody of “Forever” is evidence of that. “The Ones” is tailor made for party people and everyone else that simply loves dance tracks.
Isiah Collier – Parallel Universe [Night Dreamer]

“Parallel Universe”, is the latest release from Chicago native multi-instrumentalist Isiah Collier. This is a spiritual jazz journey that explores the African diaspora and connects the dots from the past to the present. “Village Song” is a thirteen minute spiritual anthem highlighted by Jimetta Rose on vocals and Sonny Daze fiery percussion. “The Lean” is an extended jam session fueled by bassist Micah Collier’s funky groove and Julien Reid’s subtle yet effective keys on top. “The Last Song” is a fitting climax to this voyage. A ten minute mellow roll call filled hazy synths and a slow burning guitar groove. A direct to disc recording, the band simply nails it in one take. Jimetta Rose’s honey soaked vocals shine throughout. Night Dreamer, the London based label has consistently delivered impressive direct to disc recordings and this is no exception. The Ancestors will be pleased and so will you.
