Dora Morelenbaum – Pique [Mr Bongo Records]

“Pique”, the solo debut from Dora Morelenbaum is awash with sublime jazz infused Brazilian rhythms. A member of the group Baja Desejo, Morlenbaum’s own project allows her to put her talents on full display. The blissful opener “Nao Vou Te Esquecer” showcases her heavenly voice over warm keys and soft guitar melodies. “Nem te procurar” is a light Disco number with an infectious groove. “VW Blue” is a jazzy number where Morlenbaum’s wordless phrasing aligns seamlessly with the stellar musicianship on board. The soothing ethereal “Petricor” is another highlight among many here. Ana Frango Eletrico serves as co-producer and creates a balance between mellow and funky tunes. Morelenbaum’s voice is understated yet passionate so you’re instantly pulled in. There’s a new generation of talent emerging from Brazil and Morelenbaum is certainly one to watch. This engaging debut is evidence of that.

Mörk – Still Dreaming [Albert’s Favourites]

Hailing from Budapest, Mork is a four piece band specializing in psychadelic jazz infused grooves. Guitarist Mark Zentai’s honey toned vocals are sprinkled over an array of ambient tracks here. “Towards The Sun” has a tasty groove and packs plenty of bounce for the dance floor. “Dromedar” is simmering apacey fusion highlighted by South London poet Brother Portrait. The mid-tempo “Only Mine” features Zentai’s vocals wrapped around a gorgeous melody and a wicked backbeat. The UK based label Albert’s Favourites consistently delivers gems and this is no exception. An impressive record that certainly deserves repeated listens.

Marcos Valle – Túnel Acústico [Far Out Recordings]

“Tunel Acustico” is the twenty third album by renowned Brazilian vocalist Marcos Valle. Valle’s latest release captures the highlights of his sixty year career. Valle has spent much of his time living between Los Angeles and Rio and the music is a reflection of the musical soundscapes of both regions. The opening track “Todo Dia Santo” is a simmering tune that features Alex Malheiros on bass and Renato Massa on drums from the legendary group Asymuth. “Life Is What It is” was originally wriiren in the late seventies by Valle and Laudir De Oliveira from the band Chicago. The breezy remastered tune features a sterling guitar solo from Paulinho Guitarra. “Feels So Good” is another composition that has been sitting on the shelf for decades. Originally recorded with the late Leon Ware, it has received AI sampling courtesy of Far Out recordings in-house producer Daniel Maunick. Ware’s falsetto is a perfect blend to Valle’s vocals. The rest of the recording is filled with an array of sublime compositions you’ve come to expect from Valle. A marvelous release from Valle who shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Rahaan Presents The Ones [BBE Music]

Chicago House and Disco DJ/Producer Rahaan has been DJ’ing since the eighties. He held down residencies at the Spot, the Buddha lounge and DJ sets around the globe. With “The Ones”, Rahaan has assembled an array of musicians and vocalists to make his compositions soar. “We Are The Ones” is infectious Disco funk that features vocalist Marcus J. Alston and Nancy Clayton. “What You Are To Me” is warm soulful House with a bubbling baseline. The warmth can be felt throughout the ten track lp. The live drums and gorgeous piano melody of “Forever” is evidence of that. “The Ones” is tailor made for party people and everyone else that simply loves dance tracks.
