Ludivine Issambourg – Above The Laws [Heavenly Sweetness]

“Above The Law” is the third solo release from Parisian Flautist LudivineA Issambourg. The eleven track release is an intoxicating brew of jazz funk with a array of musicians bringing these compositions to life. Eric Legnini’s sunny flurries on the Fender Rhodes compliment Issambourg’s flute melodies on “The Bear”. The horn section is equally compelling. Alexandre Herichon’s trombone stands out among the ensemble of saxophonists on board. “Angel Dust”, the Gil Scott Heron hit receives a rework with none other than Brian Jackson. Jackson, of course was part of the duo that composed the original and his vocals add a fresh take on the classic. “Heartbeat” opens with a laid back funky bass groove from Xavier Zolli. Issambourg’s passionate soloing is the icing on the cake. Issambourg’s prowess of her instrument is on full display here. There’s a hint of the Mizell brothers vibe as the worlds of jazz and funk blend seemlessly. Overall it’s a statement from Issambourg that she can compose tasty grooves with the best of them. A deeply satisfying record without a doubt.

The nine minute plus tune is highlighted by bandleader Antoine “Obi Riddim” Laloux’s hypnotic flurries on flute and Marco’s warm tone on Baritone sax. “Crush Bottom Fruit”, heard first on their second lp “Behind The Mask” is a mediataive tune fueled by Fab “Fondamental Big Daddy’s” electric bass. Fab sets the stage for Marco and Riddim’s warm harmonic melodies. The live recording finds the band in their element. weaving through an array of psychadelic compositions that will keep the audience in the palm of their hands. Well worth checking out.

Sababa 5 – Aspan [Batov Records]

“Aspan”, the sophomore lp from Sababa 5 dives deeper into psychadelic rock than their impressive debut. The combination of psychadelica and middle Eastern rhythms results in a wave of intoxicating compositions. “Wembley”, the opening track erupts with mind bending synths layered over a hypnotic groove. “Tri Li Li” carries the baton with the same formula with bassist Amir Sadot laying down a simmering groove. “Aeolus” is a laidback mediative composition filled with dreamy soundscapes. Guitarist Llan Smilan’s explorative playing is certain to take you for a ride. Eitan Drabkin’s wizardry on keys is deeply satisfying. There’s plenty of reason to enjoy this disc. Daniel Villarreal – Panama 77 [International Anthem]

“Panama 77” is the debut of Panamanian born and Chicago based drummer Daniel Villarreal. The twelve track disc is layered with psychedelic Latin rhythms aligned with jazz fusion and folkloric sensibilities. Villarreal has been a fixture in the Chicago music scene, recently as a member of the group Dos Santos. The disc kicks off with “Bella Vista” where Villarreal demonstrates a keen sense of polyrhythms. Villarreal’s spirited percussion creates an enchanting groove for Elliot Bergman’s howling baritone. “In/On features labelmate guitarist Jeff Parker. Villarreal’s hypnotic percussion simmers over a samba beat alongside organist Dave Vettraino. With Parker’s glorious electric guitar rhythms layered on top you have an irresistible groove worthy of repeated listens. “Parque En Seis” opens with Villareal on congas and cow bells, paving the way for Bardo Martinez’s bass guitar grooves and synths. Chicago based International Anthem is known for their roster of genre bending jazz artists. Villarreal’s debut is left of center brilliance that stacks up well with their catalog.
