MOMO – Gira [Batov Records]
Brazilian native Marcelo Frota, aka Momo releases his seventh album “Gira” on the UK label Batov records. Frota’s debut album, “A Estetica do Rabisco” showcases his honey toned vocals alongside an array of folk tinged acoustic compositions. Several more recordings would follow and status building with each release. Frota now resides in London and collaborates with an eclectic band of musicians from the London jazz scene. “Para”, opens with haunting baritone sax phrasings from Tamar Osborn and hypnotics keys from Jessica Lauren. “Passo de Avarandar” is an engaging romp filled with infectious groove and lively percussion courtesy of Caetano Malta and Magnus Mehta respectively. “Summer Interlude” begins with a spirited jam session before easing into six plus minutes of mellow madness. Trombonist Rosie Turton seductive soloing layered on top of the languid grooves is a heavenly mix. Frota’s guitar rhythms alongside drummer Nick Woodmansey is a strong presence throughout. While Brazil is at the root of these compositions, Frota explores a myriad of genres that will have you yearning for more. Well done.
Paul White – Peace in Chaos [R&S Records]
“Peace in Chaos” is the third lp on R & S records from multi-instrumentalist Paul White. The eleven track release is a collection of ethereal synth heavy compositions. “Glory in Stories” is an electro pop treat filled with lush arrangements and soothing vocal harmonies. The aptly titled “Surreal” is a dreamy mid-tempo tune that is filled with joyful euphoric vibes. White has solidified himself as a premier producer who has worked with an array of musicians from Sudan Archives to Danny Brown. This release finds him front and center, crafting a record in his own personal vision. The result is a blissful journey that will brighten your mood.
The Selenites – Live From The Moon [Stereophonk]
“Live From The Moon” is the third release from the Parisian group The Selenites. The band specializes in Ethiopian music rooted in 60’s spiritual Jazz. The disc is filled with melancholic melodies and spirited rhythms. “Apollo IX” is a haunting yet fiery tune taken from their debut lp “Ethio Jazz Groove Project”. The nine minute plus tune is highlighted by bandleader Antoine “Obi Riddim” Laloux’s hypnotic flurries on flute and Marco’s warm tone on Baritone sax. “Crush Bottom Fruit”, heard first on their second lp “Behind The Mask” is a mediataive tune fueled by Fab “Fondamental Big Daddy’s” electric bass. Fab sets the stage for Marco and Riddim’s warm harmonic melodies. The live recording finds the band in their element. weaving through an array of psychadelic compositions that will keep the audience in the palm of their hands. Well worth checking out.
